Disruptive Innovation

Change is important because that is how we grow as a society and as a person. I do know that change can be uncomfortable. Many teachers that I worked with do the same thing every year and for years before me not because it was what worked but because they were used to it. By showing them that change can be a good thing and not something that needs to be feared, we can create new and innovative programs, lessons, and classrooms.

In the TED talk, Bring on the Learning Revolution, Sir Ken Robinson makes many good points about our current education system and how we can make it better. He states, "The result is that we are educating people out of their creative capacities. Picasso once said this: 'All children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.'" While I do think that we have made strides in education toward making things somewhat more flexible, I think it is still too rigid for students to learn at their own pace and encourage exploration.

When we are looking at a blended learning approach, I think we are so focused on including technology just for the novelty of it and not really focusing on how it can enhance a student's education. To fix this, first and foremost we need to work on allowing teachers the appropriate amount of time to plan appropriately for blended learning to include both pedagogical strategies and the thoughtful integration of technology to support those strategies.
