An ePortfolio, or electronic portfolio, is a collection of work through a learning journey to show growth and comprehension. Using ePortfolios in an elementary classroom is a significant move away from the traditional paper-based work display. The work is often misplaced or thrown away before parents can even see what their student is doing. The opportunity to move to an electronic format allows the students to include items that were not able to be included before such as text documents, images, videos, and audio recordings to show their progress and learning. Having student ePortfolios will also give educators valuable insight into their students' individual growth and offer the ability to tailor
learning to their needs. In Basken’s (2008) findings he states that the Inter/National Coalition on Electronic Portfolio Research found that “the process of keeping a portfolio as fundamental for promoting in students deeper self-reflection and deeper understanding of their subjects.”
I am currently implementing ePortfolios with my innovation plan and I have already seen students focusing more on their own work and being excited to share what they know. I am looking forward to continuing my journey and documenting it through my portfolio. Over the past few courses, I have really enjoyed learning how to use a new tool and I am proud of what I have already accomplished. I am excited to share what I have learned with others well beyond the culmination of the program.
