I was surprised to hear that when it comes to change you have to take common sense out of the equation. Cross states in her TED Talk that "common sense is our greatest adversary" when it comes to change because what we rationally think would work to change people's minds isn't always how it works. Taking a look at how you present information can change how people react to what you want them to do. You have to make the information tangible, personal, and interactive. I think that using this information moving forward with my innovation plan can be greatly helpful when trying to get the rest of the teachers in my school on board.
Dr. Cross's change recommendations and the Influencer's Model of Six Sources of Influence are quite similar. They both focus on the importance of factors such as motivation, ability, social support, and environmental conditions in influencing behavior change. The connections between these two concepts highlight the diverse nature of effective strategies for bringing about change.
My innovation plan is to implement student ePortfolios in our elementary school. I believe that this is beneficial for every party involved. For the students, it gives them the opportunity to have a creative way to share their work that is uniquely their own, reflect on their growth, and collaborate with others. The teachers are able to monitor progress and create personalized lessons for the students based on the growth shown in the student's ePortfolio and their interests. Parents will be able to communicate with teachers about their student's growth and their work will be easily accessible from home for students to be able to share and keep parents informed. All of this will create empowered students who feel a sense of pride, ownership, and self-awareness in their own learning journey.
